EXOSHELL Grid – An Innovative Façade System for the Future of Our Cities

Imagine streets that transform into green, energy-efficient living spaces. Buildings that generate their own electricity, help cool the urban climate, and make smart use of rainwater. A system that unlocks new economic potential—even in places where no usable space was previously available.

This is exactly what our modular, load-bearing EXOSHELL Grid structure makes possible completely decoupled from the existing building facade. A patented facade system that combines environmental effectiveness with economic value, thereby creating new opportunities for individuals, cities, and countries.

The Foundation for Green, Energy-Efficient Architecture

Whether for new construction or existing buildings—EXOSHELL’s open, modular, and retrofittable support structure is freestanding and thus thermally decoupled from the building envelope. It is based on a flexible grid and rail system. This makes it easy to integrate green facades, photovoltaic modules, balconies, or outdoor seating areas without having to alter the existing architecture. Complemented by a well-designed retention roof, the available space is expanded—for additional greenery and PV systems that further increase energy efficiency.

This external structure forms a forward-looking system for the sustainable development of buildings and entire streetscapes. It helps reduce heat, store water, generate energy, and economically harness the potential of unused spaces. And it works in harmony with nature—by conserving resources, strengthening biodiversity, mitigating heat islands, and contributing to urban redensification.

System Components – Unique in Every Detail

EXOSHELL Green

Green facades increase biodiversity, help regulate temperature, absorb particulate matter and CO₂, and noticeably improve the microclimate. At the same time, they enhance the quality of the environment—both indoors and outdoors—through their natural insulation and soundproofing properties.

EXOSHELL Energy

Integrated photovoltaic modules enable a largely self-sufficient energy supply. They power both smart building systems and a high-performance charging infrastructure for e-mobility. This reduces operating costs in the long term and increases cost-effectiveness.

EXOSHELL Space

EXOSHELL’s external support structure opens up valuable new usable space—for example, for balconies, outdoor seating areas, or compact living modules. This enhances the quality of life and creates additional rental opportunities as well as new economic potential.

EXOSHELL Sense – for efficient operations and research

EXOSHELL’s smart infrastructure—supported by AI—offers intelligent data collection, providing an ideal foundation for connected building technology: Automated irrigation and drainage of green spaces, autonomous growth monitoring, mowing robots for ongoing maintenance, and sensors for real-time collection of relevant environmental data to ensure optimal control. This enables research partners and building operators to continuously gain valuable insights. The connectivity can be limited to individual buildings or expanded to entire neighborhoods. Additionally, the system integrates acoustic and insulation layers as well as lightning protection, thereby making a decisive contribution to the holistic facade concept.

EXOSHELL Ops – the hybrid maintenance platform

The EXOSHELLGrid functions as a structurally load-bearing service infrastructure ( Vertical Highway”) that revolutionizes access to the entire building envelope:

  • A platform for people and machines: The structure is designed as a walkable system. It provides both service personnel and (humanoid) robots with safe and direct access to every zone of the facade. Traditional tools such as scaffolding, facade lifts, or industrial climbers are largely rendered obsolete.

  • Holistic Management: The system enables the highly efficient execution of all care and maintenance tasks. This includes the automated or manual care of vertical gardens, the cleaning of window surfaces, and the maintenance of integrated technical modules.

  • Convergence of Craftsmanship and Robotics: While humanoid robots handle repetitive tasks such asmicro-gardening or cleaning, the platform serves as a stable base for humans to perform complex technical interventions.

  • Preventive maintenance: Accessibility enables continuous monitoring of the building structure. Mobile inspection units can detect thermal leaks, cracks, or corrosion at an early stage, thereby drastically reducing the property’s lifecycle costs (OPEX).

Fire Protection and Safety – Reliably Integrated

The system meets comprehensive fire safety requirements: An automatic sprinkler system protects the facade components, and a dry riser can also be integrated depending on the specific building. Non-combustible materials and appropriate fire compartments prevent the rapid spread of fire and enable early fire suppression measures. Integrated escape routes and maintenance access points also facilitate daily operations and maintenance activities and enhance safety in emergencies.
