Retention and Water Management – Efficient, Smart, and Reliable

A key component of the EXOSHELL concept is the targeted management of rainwater: retention, storage, and controlled release relieve the burden on the urban sewer system while simultaneously improving water supply to green spaces. This function can be implemented particularly effectively through retention roofs.


However, this requires a sufficiently level roof surface—typically a flat roof. Only then can the water be temporarily stored instead of running off immediately. For existing buildings, therefore, the feasibility of this approach depends on the existing roof structure.

System Architecture

  • Multi-layered structure consisting of root protection, water-retention mats, drainage, and substrate
  • Supplementary facade retention basins or trellises with an integrated storage core
  • Separate cistern with pumps, solenoid valves, and emergency overflows (separate from the drinking water system)
  • Optional: Filtration and UV treatment

Sensors in the facade collect weather data, air quality readings, water levels, energy flows, and peak loads. This information is transmitted via a gateway to a cloud environment.

The data collected forms the basis for a dynamic control system: irrigation, nutrient supply, and maintenance processes using robotic mowers automatically adapt to actual conditions. This not only ensures that the plants maintain a consistently healthy and well-groomed appearance but also results in significantly more efficient operations.

At the same time, smart connectivity makes the impact of greening measurable—a decisive advantage, for example, for investors, research institutions, or operators who require transparency regarding performance and impact. And through predictive analytics, anomalies are detected early on, preventing downtime and unnecessary maintenance costs.
